Jane Golub
2019 Fuel Her Fire Lifetime of Inspiration Awardee
With admiration and gratitude, Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region posthumously dedicates its first Lifetime of Inspiration Award to our beloved friend and supporter, Jane Golub.
An iconic businesswoman, philanthropist, educator, and civic leader, Jane had a way of making the world a better place. She championed numerous causes dedicated to improving the health and lives of women and children throughout the Capital Region, and committed herself to not only supporting, but elevating, organizations in her adopted hometown of Schenectady.
Before her lengthy second career with Price Chopper/Market 32, Jane taught at Hillside Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District for more than 20 years. She and her beloved husband, Neil, were the driving force behind helping to bring the Anti-Defamation League’s prejudice awareness and reduction program, “A World of Difference” to schools in the Capital Region. Jane coordinated teams of teachers to develop the curriculum and trained hundreds of individuals who helped spread it statewide, particularly in elementary schools where she believed the seeds of bigotry and hate begin.
A tireless advocate, Jane was particularly devoted to a number of organizations in our local communities and beyond. A few of the many she championed are the Schenectady Day Nursery, the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, Ellis’ Women’s Night Out, miSci, Proctor’s, the American Heart Association and its Better U challenge, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region. She dedicated herself to improving women’s breast and heart health in Schenectady through her support of Ellis Medicine and its Bellevue Women’s Center. Her commitment to improving the lives of others, to expanding cultural and educational programming, and in ensuring that children, women, and families have vital resources available to them is immeasurable.
Jane’s signature wit, warmth, energy and grace continue to be gifts to all whose lives she touched. Her legacy in our communities and in our hearts will last for generations.
